A simple guide to understanding travel insurance

Most people go on holiday without any sort of insurance. This could be since they have been lucky to have no incidents up until now or they do not understand exactly what they get from travel insurance. It’s a reasonable thing to do to stay away from something you do not understand, but travel insurance is there to help you.

Here are some of the things that travel insurance offers:

Emergency medical cover

When you are abroad, it can be very stressful if you were ever hospitalised. Sometimes depending on what country, you are in, any sort of treatment can become very expensive. If you fall ill or require medical assistance, unfortunately you will have to pay for the full cost of any treatment you have. If you have travel insurance, it will act like a travel health insurance and will pay for all your medical cost and take a huge load off your chest.

It’s important to tell your insurance of any pre-existing medical conditions as this could affect your chance of claiming any money back. The best thing to do, is to state any sort of illness that you have or have had previously. No matter how small or irrelevant you think it is, just note it down as it will only cover you back.

Personal liability

Personal liability is not something that everyone thinks about but it should be. While abroad we are all doing things that puts us in a position to cause damage to something or even injure someone. Travel insurance will cover for personal liability should you ever face any legal bills.

Cancellation

Cancellation is probably one of the most useful things about travel insurance. Things may come up before your holiday which may cause you to cancel your holiday. Cancelling a holiday means you may lose money that you have already spent in booking the holiday. Travel insurance will be willing to pay you back for your holiday depending on your reason. Buying your travel insurance just after you find out you cannot go on your holiday will be too late.

Missed flights

A missed flight can be caused by pretty much anything and it’s the worst feeling to find out that you can’t go on holiday because your flight has left. Bad weather, bad traffic and breakdowns can ruin your chances of making your flight. If you can somehow show that you did everything in your ability to try and make your flight, travel insurance will reimburse you for the cost of your missed flights.

It is important to buy travel insurance as soon as you book holiday. Not even the best travel insurance will cover you for something that happened before you purchased their insurance.
