5 Health Tips for Valentine's Day

Love is in the air! Plans are being made on what to do on Valentine’s Day: what to eat, what to buy, where to buy it from, where to go, what to do, how to impress etc. Whether you have a partner to spend it with, or you’re loving on yourself, here are a few tips for staying healthy this season.

  1. Choose activities that encourage physical activity: Your romantic activity does not have to be sedentary. Infuse physical activity into your Valentine’s Day by doing things like taking a romantic walk or playing a game of tennis. Your heart will thank you for it!
  2. Limit alcohol use: If you choose to consume alcohol on your Valentine’s Day date, do so with moderation. Excessive alcohol intake is damaging to the health. It is also important to avoid drunk driving. Don’t drink and drive and discourage others from drinking and driving.
  3. Practice portion control: You can enjoy that tempting box of chocolates without sacrificing healthy habits! Rather than eating it all within a day or two, store it in the fridge and eat it over the next couple of weeks.
  4. Avoid risky sexual behavior: It’s important to stay safe and stick to safe sexual practices this Valentine. Unprotected sex can predispose you to infection and even life-threatening diseases.
  5. Take care of your mental health: Valentine’s Day can get stressful because of the pressure. It is therefore important to prioritize mental health over fulfilling people’s expectations during the season. Do not be under pressure to buy or pay for things you can’t afford or to be partnered up for Valentine's. Practice self-care by scheduling social time with a friend, taking a relaxing bubble bath, or even getting in a brisk walk. Simply taking 30 minutes for yourself each day can improve your mood and help you feel recharged.
